| FEATURE COMMENTARY |
This morning, May 31, 2004, I went to the barn to attend a wonderful new colt.
On my way back to the house, I saw *Algomej talking over his outside stall door
to his best friend *Weltawa and her new filly by *Ganges. He loved to reach over
his window and schmooze with the foals, sometimes licking them to the point they
were soaking. I smiled to myself, and thought how happy he was. A half an hour
later, I was told that he had left us. His grand and noble heart just stopped.
He was gone.
*Algomej was, to my knowledge, the last son of the great
Celebes, and was the last offspring of the incredible foundation mare Algonkina.
He was 31 years old.
*Algomej was bred by Janow Podlaski. He stood in Poland for
a number of years, then was trade/leased to Sweden in exchange for *Probat.
While in Sweden he was named 1982 Swedish National Champion Stallion. He left
many excellent offspring there, including Blommerod’s stallion, Algorytm. Full sister
to *Algomej was Algeria, a queen of
Janow, who died two years ago. She was Polish National Champion Mare. Her
daughters *Almeria and *Algebra are still at Canterbury Farm representing the
Algonkina family.
*Algomej returned to Poland from Sweden, and in 1985 was
shown to a tie in points for National honors with *Penitent. They stood nose to
nose for the determination, the audience divided, cheering for their choice: a
rich bay Kuhailan, and a silver grey Saklawi. They epitomized the differences in
types, yet were both incredible stallions. The nod was given to *Penitent
because he scored higher in type, whereas *Algomej scored higher in movement.
*Algomej was Reserve Polish National Champion Stallion.
He sired *Deficyt, who sold for $609,000, *Algonkian, owned
by Joe Malloy, *Epizod, *Estyma ($535,000), Ejnia, and the excellent producing
mare, Elleida. His Kuhailan son, Gauguin (x *Gildia by *El Paso) will carry his
sire line at Canterbury Farm and his blood will
continue as well through his 7 daughters here.
He was sold late in life (age 17) to the US. I acquired him
when was 24, and he has been with me ever since. He was supposed to be
decreasing in fertility, but the first year he bred 16 mares, 15 foals were born
the next year, and many since. He was retired a few years ago from breeding but
he certainly didn’t give up his interest.
His joy of the day was to watch the parade of mares and foals go out in the
mornings from the barn to field and back in the evenings. He would reach out,
sniff and talk to each one as they went by. Given his tough constitution, he was
healthy and looked good, with slick coat, good body condition, and a bright eyes
to the last.
*Algomej was 31. He will be very much missed throughout the
world of Polish breeding and certainly here. He was an excellent stallion and
representative of the Polish Kuhailan horse.
I am so grateful that he spent part of his life on the path
with me. He was a gentleman, a kind soul, and a magnificent creation. I loved
him dearly.
Dziekuje, *Algomej, moj przyjaciel. Do widzenia.
