| FEATURE COMMENTARY |
ALGONKWIN died yesterday (July 21,
2004) from an obstruction of the small intestine. At age 25 he was not a
candidate for surgery and we were forced to end his suffering. He was buried on
our property beside a pond in the shade of a willow.
Algonkwin was bred by Dick & Kay Patterson and was born
in Sisters, Oregon. His dam *Alpaga was one of their most treasured broodmares
imported from Janow Podlaski. She was the full sister of Algeria the "Queen of
Janow" and full sister to *Algomej.
Algonkwin was sold to Chestnut Hill farm in 1982 for "big
money" but was returned to the Patterson's when Chestnut Hill closed. He
remained there until Dick & Kay divorced and became Kay's horse in the
division of property.Kay included Algonkwin in the Freeman auction held Oct 31,
2002. We purchased him at that auction. He totally changed our program. The
access to a high quality Bask son for our mares allowed us to breed to a higher
standard without forcing us to constantly go to outside stallions.
Algonkwin moved with us to England in 1994. His first foals
for us were born in England as their dams were in foal when they moved.
Algonkwin was not highly appreciated by English breeders. His Kuhailan looks
were out of fashion in the show ring and Bask was described as a "small, plain,
brown horse".
Despite this his foals did well in the show ring. His first foal born in the UK,
TA Pistacja, was a multiple halter Champion and went on to produce multiple
halter Champion foals with different sires. His foals have also done well in
ridden classes, endurance and eventing.
We have retained both sons and daughters for our breeding
program. We had four foals by Algonkwin in 2004; all colts, all of excellent
quality. It was as if he knew time was short and he wanted to make sure we had
some nice sons to carry on. We bred mares to him this year but his semen quality
was poor and none of the mares settled.
Algonkwin was a lovely stallion to be around. He was very
intelligent and proud. He was easy to handle and never was nasty or dangerous;
he would not tolerate being treated with anything but respect and put new grooms
in their place.
He will miss him dearly. He did so much for us and he left
us with some wonderful sons and daughters. In total he had just over 70 foals
both in the US and the UK. God bless you ALGONKWIN.
