With 800 earned points during the 2001 Endurance Competition
season highlighted by unprecedented first place finishes and Best Condition
Awards at both the Biltmore 100 and the celebrated Old Dominion in June, Jayel
Super (Zambizy x Jayel Suprize) topped the list of USA East competitors
participating in the Pan Am Endurance Championships in Vermont on August 25th.
Jayel Super crossed the finish line just seconds out of the top three finishers
to finish fourth overall in 11:48.16. He was the first to finish for the USA
East team, and in doing so, secured the prestigious Team Gold medal along with
fellow riders Brenda Baird on Bells Snitzel and Meg Sleeper on Shyrocco
Troilus.
Writing for the Arabian Horse World
about some of Super's success this season, Genie Stewart-Spears had
this to say, "...it was Stagg Newman's horse, Jayel Super, who took all the
glory. Not only did he win the race in an amazing time of 12 hours and 36
minutes for the grueling course, but he also earned the Best Vet Score, AERC
Best Condition and the Old Dominion Trophy."
"According to Newman, 'Super is the first
horse to get both the 'first-to-finish' and High Vet Score awards since the High
Vet Score Award was introduced in 1993. And Super broke his own course record by
51 minutes.."
"Although Newman and Super cinched a
position on the Eastern Time Zone squad for the Pan-American Championship by
winning the Biltmore ride the month before, Newman said his goal this year had
been to win the Old Dominion. (The pair won it two years ago.)"
"I believe the Old Dominion is the toughest
ride in the country," says Newman. "I have ridden in all AERC regions and,
although I have not ridden the Tevis, friends who have ridden both say the Old
Dominion is tougher."
"As for the Pan-American Championship,
Newman says, 'I was on the team in 1993 when we achieved that Team Gold Medal in
Calgary. I hope to help defend the Team Gold Medal this year as well.'
"
Congratulations to Stagg and Super for
defending the USA East's title as reigning Pan-American Gold
Medalists!
